The Nottingham Trent Renegades American football team competes annually in the
British Universities American Football League (BUAFL), which is the largest
competition for American Football in Europe. The season runs from November to April.
2010/11 proved to be another successful year in the short history of the NTU
Renegades, for the 2nd year in a row and only the 2nd year since the creation of the
Renegades the team won the highly contested Charity Varsity Series game against
the University of Nottingham Outlaws. Also for the 2nd year the Renegades made the
post-season advancing all the way to the BUAFL Plate semi-finals losing to eventual
winners the University of Cardiff Cobras in a hotly contested game.
2009/10 was the first season that we played as a single institution team, which was
a great success as we finished with seven wins and only one overtime loss in the
regular season, earning us a playoff spot! Also the team won their first Varsity Series
victory over the University of Nottingham. 2010 was the first year that American
football has been included in the series.
Our team caters for all abilities and we are looking to recruit heavily for the coming
season and build on the success of recent seasons. An American football team is
made up of many positions and requires a range of player builds and skill sets to
succeed. The club will provide all the equipment you need and our experienced
coaches will teach you everything you need to know to improve your skills. Whether
you are a complete begginer or experienced veteran you are always welcome to come
and enjoy the game. Any shape, any size there is always a position for you.
In addition to on-field activities, the club has an active social scene with:
-Regular Wednesday night socials, which include other sports club members
-National Football League games on Sunday nights.
-Attend Saloufest as part of the University annual Sports Tour.
I've never played before, can I take part?
ABSOLUTELY! Most Renegades have never played before they came to university. We have a wealth of coaching talent that can teach you the rules and fundamentals of the game in just a couple of sessions. Then as you continue, you will gain experience and learn from those around you until you are ready to play in our first game in November.
Will I get in the team?
Unlike a lot of other sports, here at the American Football we do not have a trial as such, and no players are turned away. American Football teams are very large, with each player playing a vital role. We try to make sure that each player gets a chance to show their stuff on the field.
What about the Equipment?
As you can imagine, a new set of American football equipment can be very expensive. That is why as a part of your membership fees you will get all the safety equipment that you need rented to you for the year.
How far can I go in this sport?
We are very keen to try to help players with the desire to progress in this sport. Obviously, if you become a better player, your performance on the pitch will improve, thus aiding the team. There are opportunities to play for the regional All-Star Team, play for a Senior Team during the summer months, or even represent your country with the Great Britain representative side.
OK, How do I join?
The easiest way is to come to one of our training sessions, detailed below. You will need to bring comfortable running gear, and rugby or football boots would be a good idea as we are training on grass on a Sunday or astro on a Thursday. Alternatively email the club if you can't make it to see us, and ask us any questions you want on the contact us page. If you miss the first session, don't feel like you can't join us later, as we are always looking for new players!
Im not really interested in playing, anything else I can get involved in?
Certainly! We are always looking for volunteers to help out on game days. We can offer you free food after the games, as well as the same drinks offers that the players get at our sponsor bar. Plus you'll get someone to watch the NFL games with.
